Linus Media Group case study in numbers

Linus Media Group makes technology video and the gear that goes with it just outside Vancouver. Started in 2012, the company employs over 100 people and has built up more than 26 million subscribers across its channels.

                  7-8prototypes in a single week

In-house 3D printing allows the engineering team to physically test 7 to 8 different versions of a design in a week before finalizing a product.

                  Prototyping the LTT screwdriver handle

                  1. ProblemThe team aimed to create a best in class ratcheting screwdriver with an ergonomic grip, a strong magnet, and in handle bit storage. On the first day of the project, the engineering team had nothing more than a basic concept and a rough handle model.
                  2. SolutionEngineers utilized FDM 3D printing for quick, cost effective iterations. By printing multiple physical versions of the handle and end caps, they could test the ergonomics, refine the internal bit storage mechanism, and make precise adjustments based on actual handling rather than digital renders.Printed onOriginal Prusa MK4S
                  3. ValueRapid physical prototyping allowed the team to efficiently validate the design. It ensured the final tool fit naturally in the hand and reduced user fatigue during operation.

“The LTT screwdriver is our take on a best in class ratcheting screwdriver. I am extremely happy with our result, as are hundreds of thousands of customers!”

Kyle Tharratt, Engineering Manager at LMG

SLA resin printing for mold approval

                  1. ProblemTransitioning a product like the screwdriver into mass production requires highly accurate validation. Utilizing standard FDM prints is not always sufficient for examining intricate internal mechanisms and fine surface details before committing to expensive production tooling.
                  2. SolutionFor high detail models and parts requiring specialized materials, the team shifted to SLA printing. They utilized the Original Prusa SL1 resin printer, which proved instrumental in accurately prototyping the most complex internal components of the screwdriver.Printed onOriginal Prusa SL1S SPEED
                  3. ValueSLA printing provided the necessary dimensional accuracy and smooth surface finish to fully evaluate the product. This efficient design validation prevented costly errors before transitioning to full scale production.

Manufacturing custom equipment for video production

                  1. ProblemProducing technology content across multiple sets requires constant adaptation. The production team frequently needs highly specific items, like camera mounts or testing rigs, that are either unavailable on the market or take too long to source from external suppliers.
                  2. SolutionThe Creator Warehouse relies on the Original Prusa MK4S to manufacture practical items on demand. The team prints lightweight monitor stands, cable organizers, and custom brackets for robotic testing fixtures in durable materials like PETG, PA11, and PC Blend CF.Printed onOriginal Prusa MK4S·Prusament PETG·Prusament PA11-CF·Prusament PC-CF
                  3. ValueHaving a reliable print farm directly in the workshop enables the team to quickly adapt to urgent needs and meet weekly video deadlines. It also allows them to produce large scale props and custom sets entirely in house.

“If you do not have a 3D printer in your workshop, you are missing out. It lets you fail fast, fail cheap, and perfect your designs before moving to full production.”

MASSLAB prints master plans clients can rearrange

The 40 person Porto architecture studio has printed nearly all of its models since 2021. Buildings, parks and terrain come out as separate swappable pieces, so a roofline changes during the meeting instead of after it.
