Meet the Prusa CORE One: Josef Prusa Announces a New 3D Printer as the Foundation of a New Product Line

November 19, 2024, FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Czech developer, entrepreneur, and investor Josef Prusa surprised 3D printing enthusiasts today with an exciting announcement at the Formnext trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany. Introducing the Prusa CORE One, the latest addition to the globally renowned Prusa brand, this model marks a significant leap forward, aiming to attract both newcomers and professionals in the world of 3D printing.

The Prusa CORE One stands out immediately with a strikingly different design compared to previous desktop 3D printers by Prusa Research, including the recently launched Original Prusa MK4S, which remains part of the company’s product lineup. “Open-frame 3D printers are still an excellent choice for many uses, such as printing the most commonly used materials like PLA and PETG. We’re confident that the CORE One and MK4S can coexist for many years to come,” said Josef Prusa, CEO of Prusa Research.

The first units of the Prusa CORE One are set to ship to customers in January next year. Pre-orders are now open on Prusa3D.com for introductory price of 1199 USD (VAT excl.) and 1349 EUR (VAT incl.).

The Prusa CORE One uses a CoreXY kinematic system, offering faster speeds and a more compact design compared to the MK series. Despite being 30% smaller than the MK4S, it boasts a 30% larger build volume. With its fully enclosed chamber and active chamber temperature control (up to 55 °C), the Prusa CORE One is ideal for printing advanced materials while maintaining excellent compatibility with common materials like PLA and PETG. The active temperature control also overcomes a common limitation of enclosed printers. “It’s ironic that many manufacturers recommend printing PLA and PETG with the printer doors open, which contradicts the concept of an enclosed chamber. We’ve worked hard to avoid that compromise,” added Prusa.

The Prusa CORE One features exceptional stability, robust construction, and superior print speed and quality. It is equipped with advanced safety measures, including a door sensor. “While the CORE One may look different, it still adheres to our philosophy—it’s robust, reliable, and built to last for years. Users can still disassemble it with just a screwdriver. Nothing is glued or welded. We know our users love to modify their printers,” Prusa emphasized.

Addressing growing concerns about security, particularly in Europe and the U.S., the CORE One is designed with user privacy in mind. Many current 3D printers require an internet connection or rely exclusively on cloud services. Prusa CORE One offers complete flexibility. Users can operate the printer fully offline, with no limitations. Even the firmware can be updated offline - an many manufacturers no longer offer. The firmware is open-source, enabling anyone to verify that the printer operates securely without unauthorized data transmission.

The Prusa CORE One represents a versatile platform for future upgrades and new models. Staying true to Prusa Research’s legacy, the company will offer a Conversion Kit, enabling users to fully transform their Original Prusa MK4S 3D printers into the new Prusa CORE One.

Alongside the CORE One, Prusa Research unveiled other innovations at Formnext. The most notable is the Prusa Pro SLX and its accessories - a unique and innovative solution for industrial resin 3D printing. The SLX was introduced last year as a development prototype and this year, the company is presenting a near-final product slated for release in June 2025. Additionally, the automated print farm, Prusa Pro AFS, will be available in Q3 2025.
